Now, around Otter Tail County, we're all pretty used to that little dashboard tire light popping on during a freezing morning in January. We usually just chuckle, blame Mother Nature, and top off the air.
But lately, with the summer sun finally beating down on us, I've had a whole bunch of folks pulling into our service drive, looking a bit puzzled. They pop their head in my door and say, "Joe, it's a gorgeous, hot summer day! Why on earth is my tire pressure light staring at me?"
It seems a little backwards, doesn't it? We all know heat expands things, so your tires shouldn't be low! Well, after looking at thousands of tires over my career, I can tell you that the summer heat plays its own funny little tricks on your wheels.

The Physics (Made Simple!): Why Hot Weather Triggers Your Light
Your vehicle has a helpful little system called the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). Its only job is to watch your tires like a hawk and turn on a warning light if the pressure drops too low or rises too high by 25% from what the factory recommends.
When our Minnesota summers get sizzling, two common things tend to happen that make Joe's phone ring:
1. The Afternoon Heat Spike (Over-Inflation)
Here is a great rule of thumb to remember: For every 10°F change in the temperature outside, your tire pressure changes by about 1 PSI (pound per square inch).
Let's say you filled your tires to a nice, perfect 32 PSI on a cool morning. By the afternoon, it's 85 degrees out, and you're cruising down the highway. The hot pavement and the friction of driving can easily heat the air inside your tire by 50 degrees or more! That pushes your tire pressure up by 5 or 6 PSI. If it passes that upper safe limit, your car's computer gets nervous and triggers the light to warn you things are getting too tight.
2. The Hidden Leak (The Next-Morning Surprise)
Sometimes, the light actually waits until the next morning to surprise you. If your tire has a slow, tiny leak, the blazing afternoon heat might expand the air just enough to hide the problem while you're driving home. But once your car sits in the garage overnight and the air cools back down, the pressure plummets below the safe line. Boom, you start up the car for work, and there's the light!

Instead, open your driver's side door and look for that handy little yellow and white sticker on the door jamb.
